City leaders have launched a new program that they hope will alleviate two the problems with driving on Miami Beach: traffic and parking.

The city's new car sharing program literally provides a vehicle for the carless to get around.

"We've seen that this works. It's been successful in Paris, Chicago, New York City and other progressive cities throughout the world," said Michael Gongora, Miami Beach City Commissioner.

It's a partnership between Miami Beach and Hertz. The rental car company is offering its vehicles at eight city garages. Drivers can pay by the hour or by the day. Drivers just have to sign up for free with Hertz, and the company will send the drivers a personal key fob. Each driver can keep the key fob and use it to get into any car they reserve online at any time.

"The (ignition) key to the vehicle is in the car all time. It's secured to the car and remains in the vehicle so when you leave, you simply use your key fob to lock the car again. The fob must be with the vehicle to operate," said John Colloca, manager with Hertz On Demand.

This car on demand service program is modeled after the bike sharing program that Miami Beach was one of the first cities in South Florida to offer. That program has been a huge success.

"This was just one more cog in the tool kit of saying, ‘If you don't need a car, you don't need to buy one,’" said City Manager Jorge Gonzalez.

Rates start at just $9 an hour, and that price includes gas. There's no need to worry about insurance because the company covers its customers. As for repairs, those aren't the drivers’ problem, either.

The city is leasing the parking spaces in its garages to Hertz for its On Demand program at $75 a space. The city will also get a small cut of the revenue.

In the long run, city leaders hope that by giving people a few cars to share, they'll be able to get a few more off the streets.

Right now, customers have 20 vehicles to choose from, but Hertz said it will have a total of 100 available on demand, including an electric vehicle. To sign up for the program, or find out in which garage you can rent a car, click here.
